Google Earth opens a KMZ better than anything free, and the limits a field team hits are not its own: they belong to Google My Maps, which documents a 5 MB unzipped KML and 10,000 features per map, read on 1 October 2026. At that ceiling a My Maps map has room for two attribute columns.
Export a symbol-drawn point, re-open it, and the symbol is still there: both arms carry the artwork, KMZ as an icons PNG entry and KML as the same raster inlined in a data URI. What neither carries is the symbol's identity, which is why the Marker colour control comes back drawn and disabled.
A KMZ is a KML file inside a zip, so the archive can only be one of four things and the viewer says which. The renamed .zip that is refused, the zip with no KML in it, the nested KML that opens anyway, and the file that is not an archive — each with the banner it produces and a one-line fix.
